How to Setup iCloud Accounts in Gnome/Linux

I recently installed System76’s Pop!_OS on my desktop after experiencing a few issues with Fedora on a system with an nVidia card. It works great everywhere else I have used Fedora, but not with nVidia (fun video link).

Speaking of another service that does not play well with Linux, when I installed Pop!_OS I wanted to set up my iCloud email account in Gnome’s Online Accounts settings and encountered a troubleshooting nightmare for almost an hour. I want to help take that pain away from anyone attempting to do the same in Gnome or one of its customized derivatives in a common GNU/Linux distribution.

Let us get right to it!

Open the Settings panel and find “Online Accounts”

Click the “IMAP and SMTP” button in the list

In the next dialog box, fill out your full email address and your name and click the Forward button

In the next IMAP dialog box, fill in the following options

  • IMAP Server: imap.mail.me.com
  • Username: email_address@icloud.com
  • Password: <One-Time Use, App Password if using MFA>
  • Encryption: Choose SSL on a dedicated port from the dropdown menu

In the SMTP next dialog box, fill in the following options

  • SMTP Server: smtp.mail.me.com
  • Username: email_address@icloud.com
  • Password: <One-Time Use, App Password if using MFA>
  • Encryption: Choose STARTTLS after connecting from the dropdown menu

The end.
